VA adaption proceedings

A while ago several Value Addon modules had been separated from the core. This article gives a short overview about what is happening to them and how you can help with that.

The goal behind the VA separation was not to get simply rid of their maintenance. Instead the core is becoming more slim as it should to improve it's maintainability.

So all modules which are not required by all projects Zikula is being used for (not only websites, but also intranet applications, web services, and so on) should not remain in the core. They are temporarily placed in the parked project, waiting for adoption by interested developers. The core itself does not have enough manpower to develop new fancy features for all these modules. Hence the core devs focus on the platform itself, not the application running on it.

The ideal future for the VA modules are small efficient teams for each single project. In the meanwhile some first activities started: Mateo and Erik adopted the News module and recently finished a new 2.4 version of it. And David Nelson just volunteered for Banners, Credits and Stats. If you are interested to help with these modules, please visit the according CoZi projects and contact the maintainers.

Adapting parked modules is actively supported. If you adopt a module, you will have several possibilities to get help and support. Thus there exists the VA Adaption Working Group lead by Mateo, it is the primary contact for all questions and concerns regarding VA development. Also the core devs help you by applying all architectural changes also to the VA modules.

We are still looking forward for new maintainers. If you are interested, please visit http://code.zikula.org/parked/browser/trunk/interesting and browse the parked modules to see which one is important for you.

Pages
Hi,
When more people are willing I would like to help on the Pages module as well. Some of the ideas in the News module (cartegory list etc) could also be applied to Pages.
Are there some more volunteers for a seperate project already?

VA in extension DB
hello

Concerning the VA, is it possible to add them in the extension library (even if they are orphan of a developper ) in order to link them as dependances in our submissions.

Thanks in advanced

Good point mumuri
I'll add the parked modules to the ExtDB to link them as dependencies if needed. FAQ was adopted by Kyle recently, and others are still in the Cozi/parked project.

Volunteers, just contact me icon_wink

http://code.zikula.org/core/log?rev=25714&stop_rev=25712

when i put a pnModurl to the credits with a customized template for this part, i would like to be able to put this module as a dependance.

EDIT
if you look
- authldap
- Ephemerids
- PendingContent
- Sniffer
are not in the extDb
