Time to Embrace PHP 5

Out with the old and in with the new? We not quite, but since the release of PHP more than 5 years ago, it's finally time we all took the responsible action and left PHP 4. Most webhosts are using PHP 5 and those that aren't need a wake up call.

The Zikula Project will now cease support for PHP 4 in the next major release of Zikula Core, version 1.3.0 slated for late January 2010.

This will open up many possibilities for both Core development and for 3rd party module developers.

Zikula and PHP 5 compatibilty for Fedora 12
You really need to help folks with your PHP5 incompatibility. I just installed Fedora 12 and broke my Zikula websites, perhaps beyond repair. Please post your PHP work-arounds quickly!

If this happens again, I will abandon Zikula.

All versions of Zikula work under PHP < 5.3.0. Zikula 1.2.0 works on PHP <= 5.3.1 because they deprecated functions. This affected many web apps.

Zikula works fine with PHP5 right now, it just doesn't take advantage of all the features it could. I have MANY website running Zikula on php5, as do many people here. The fact that YOURS doesn't run, doesn't mean Zikula is at fault. maybe you installed Fedora wrong...

Abandoning Zikula
I was forced to abandon Zikula last night, due the abundance of "deprecated" warnings and whatever about Fedora 12 that broke Zikula.

I cannot believe I was the first one to encounter the numerous warnings of deprecated writing in the Zikula source.

I have two more Zikula website (including one that is still down) that will need a refit, because Zikula was broken in Fedora 12.

I have no time to debug the Zikula source

It is the right decision. You always must be in step with the times. Progrees even forced me to understand what a form builder is, in order to provide a convenience to users of the site
