Google Summer of Code 2009
The Google Summer of Code 2009 has begun - at least for the organizations: Until March 13th we have time to apply and we will apply. Simon is already working our the application.
If you don't know what th e Google Summer of Code is, you should check out Philip Johnson's introduction at youtube.com. I met Philip in Mountain View at last year's mentor summit and he is really a nice guy and he seems to be a really good teacher. He does a great job of explaining Summer of Code.
So, if you are a student as of April 2009 and older than 18 and interested in at once getting into open source development and making 4500,- USD by the end of the summer, you should take a look at our list of project ideas. If you are interested in one of them, you can already get in touch with me (steffen@zikula.org) - although we can't promise to be accepted by Google it's good to start as soon as possible discussing the details of a project so you can put together a really good application.

a little question around this
i m a bit curious about this google summer of code, not about the project in themself, but more about the organisation ?
for instance, what happened when a project is not finished ? does google staff say they won't pay for it ?
for projects which were developped last year, and especially the search module, will it be merge with the new search module ?
There is a mid-term and a final evaluation when mentors are asked to tell Google if they are satisfied with the project's progress, how the student is communcating and if there are problems and so on. In the end the mentor is asked to say if the student passed or failed. If he fails he won't get paid.
The search module will be released as an extra module. We've got it running here and I tested it on kaffeeringe.de Yet I also found problems on other servers. We'll see f that can be fixed or if the module will have special requirements.
Then there is the advanced categories system that will e merged into 2.0 afaik.
