Good bye, IE6
Not 100% core related, but I guess this is the best place for such
kind of announcement.
After reading this
article and watching the graph I came to the conclusion "yep,
they are right". I talked to Carsten (herr.vorragend) and Flo (quan)
about this issues as well and we decided to cease support for IE6 in
our modules.
Using such kind of browser that is not even supported by Microsoft any
longer causes a lot of problems on our sides and we simply want to get
rid of them. Plus, as mentioned in the article, the more we refuse to
support it the more the users will feel a little pressure to upgrade
to IE7 or change to an even better solution like Firefox,
Opera or others like Safari or Chrome. If one is restricted to use IE6
in a company environment he should think about using the PortableApps
version of Firefox.
We prefer to spend our time on fixing real bugs or add new features
instead of finding workarounds for a problems that haven't been fixed
in years and will not be fixed in the future as well.
The modules that are affected by this are
- Avatar
- bbcode
- bbsmile
- Clickedme
- Contactlist
- Dizkus
- EZComments
- Formicula
- InterCom
- Invitation
- LastLogin
- MultiHook
- MyMap
- MyProfile
- RegisterNow
- UserDeletion
- Userpictures
- Weblog
This does not mean that they stop working with IE6 *now* but future
versions might refuse to do so or look weird because of box model or
other CSS issues.
Tickets that deal with IE6 related problems will be
closed as "wontfix".
I hope everyone will understand this step and support it as well.

Yes. It doesn't make sense to develop futures versions of modules for a dying browser. Webmasters who need IE6 compatibility can always change the templates and the CSS on their own.
IE6 is a dinosaur and compatibility concerns should totally be dropped from future development.
i don't wan't to naysaying but IE6 is used on a lot of internal application in company . Why ? because, the development effort to port the application in porduction cost too much.
it's cool that you stop the support, but i don't think it will pleased everyone.
They could use IE6 for their internal stuff and 21st century browsers for 21st century internet
No really: Frank's declaration doesn't mean that Zikula will only display blank pages in IE6 from today on. It only means that Frank and Florian will not extra test their modules in IE6 before release. That *might* lead to a different result in IE6 but there's a good chance they run anyway.
hey could use Zikula for their internal stuff :)
as the developpement effort is put to create a Object oriented cms, such a framework could be use for internal application in some company
that's one of the goal of the cms, i think . Replace actual J2EE application by php one with the same features.
